Technical

The Technical Department at Kenswed Secondary School offers three subjects namely:

  1. Business Studies
  2. Computer Studies
  3. Agriculture

Members of the Department:

  • Ms. Jacinta Miako HOD - Business Studies
  • Mr. Elias Ngugi - Agriculture
  • Mr. Pharis Mutembei - Business Studies
  • Mr. Dennis Kizito - Business Studies

Students have the opportunity to take two technical subjects at lower forms. Computer Studies is compulsory for all students at Form 1 and Form 2 levels, as we aim at producing computer literate citizens. Agriculture and Business Studies are elective subjects as they are not done by all students. In senior school, the Form 3 and Form 4, students advance with one among the three subjects. These subjects equip our learners with entrepreneurial and technical proficiency that gives them an effortless transit into the world of entrepreneurship and work after graduating from secondary school and tertiary institutions.

The technical subjects have posted a skyward trend which has been geared by the spirit of teamwork and the availability of relevant resources in the department. We are aiming at doing even better this year and in the future.

Our objective is to model our students into citizens who will be self-reliant with regards to the necessary skills for daily living.

Regards,

H.O.D Technical Department

Sports

Sports have been viewed as a way to stay healthy and fit. But sports' importance goes much further. Sports help in the overall development of students. Playing sports teaches lessons of life, such as teamwork, accountability, self-confidence, responsibility, and self-discipline.

Sports in school help prepare students to face the challenges of life. They enhance physical and mental abilities of students and help them achieve the goals of their life. One can realize the importance o sports by the various national and international sporting events organized all over the world, where sportspersons represent their own country.

The training of the students starts right from the school level. Sports help develop values of mutual trust and cooperation. They help develop students' capacities in taking instant decisions, and they enhance thought processes. The feeling of sportsmanship or sporting spirit, which develops in the sporting arena, teaches students to accept failure and to respect others. The feeling also helps in developing a calm and positive outlook, and it increases stamina by strengthening bones and muscles.

It is worth to note that as far as sports is concerned we've made tremendous progress. Since the inception of the school, we have been participating in soccer, volleyball, netball and athletics. The school has been doing quite well in athletics. We also have indoor games and mind games such as table-tennis, badminton, chess and scrabble.

This has been possible through the huge support and the tactics the athletes receive from Mr. Macharia, a seasoned professional athlete.

Apart from the tactics the runners also get kits for training. This endeavor has enabled the school produce good runners who have not only put the school at the national limelight but also global. Some of our students have chances to go outside the country and have made us proud. So far we've had several students going to Japan and USA and others are on the pipeline.

Languages

The department is concerned with the teaching and development of Both English and Kiswahili within the school. Currently we have six teachers in the department.

In pursuit of the school motto "It seems impossible until it is done", the members have put into place the following measures for improvement of both speaking skills and results among the learners:

  1. Enhancement of debating sessions among the students every Saturday from 2 P.M.
  2. Implementing the language policy where by students are expected to speak in English from Monday to Thursday and Kiswahili on Friday.
  3. Organizing interclass contests which helps the learners conversant with techniques on how to answer some of the questions during exams.
  4. Team teaching where teachers assist each other in teaching different areas.
  5. Presenting of local, national and international news by the journalism club during the assemblies which helps the students involved build confidence.

Members embrace teamwork and this has enabled students to post good performance in the K.C.S.E exam.

As a department, we look forward to improving the performance in both languages this year and years to come.

Our leadership

Education is a crucial tool that facilities a shift in our perspectives beyond immediate surroundings, transforming mirrors into windows. With a window to the world, we are better equipped to perceive and address the challenges surrounding us. At Kenswed, we guide students in redirecting their focus from challenges towards the rewards that accompany success.

We advocate for a corporal punishment-free environment, allowing students to make informed decisions without the coercion associated with physical discipline. Our belief extends to molding holistic students, fostering not only academic prowess but also essential skills such as leadership, communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, we incorporate life skills subjects to prepare students for real-life scenarios.

Our democratic selection of student leaders is coupled with leadership training to hone their skills, envisioning the development of future leaders for our country. We actively engage parents in their children's lives, recognizing that parents possess unique insights into their children's personalities. Beyond meetings, we maintain regular communication through calls to discuss the progress of the students.

Furthermore, we establish family units, assigning groups of students to individual teachers who serve as mentors. This ensures a close follow-up on academic progress, discipline, and the provision of guidance as needed.

As Kenswed, our vision is to produce self-disciplined, self-driven, creative, and innovative students capable of tackling the challenges of the contemporary world.
